Folic acid (vitamin B9) is a water-soluble B-group vitamin that plays an important role in many of the body's biochemical processes. It is involved in the synthesis of amino acids, homocysteine metabolism, and cell division.
Vitamin B9 is particularly important during periods of active growth and cell renewal, as well as when planning a pregnancy. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. To achieve a beneficial effect, a daily intake of 400 mcg of folic acid is recommended, starting at least one month before conception and continuing for three months after conception.
Since the human body cannot synthesize folates on its own, they must be obtained through a balanced diet and, if necessary, additional sources of this vitamin.
